Back to School Haze…Um, Days

back-to-schoolSo who is with me in the struggle of getting back into a routine after a more relaxed summer schedule? Yes, I know, it is two weeks in already – more than that for some – and still, I just can’t seem to adjust yet to the groove. I have two younger kids, so it’s back to picking out clothes (is it gym or music today?), ironing (I can’t stand ironing!), packing snacks (are there allergies in the classroom?), remembering to get dollars and change for lunch money (now I have to source extra dimes this year), waking up on time to get to the bus (that’s all me – kids are awake and ready in plenty of time), planning breakfast (luckily, that one is still routine) and then getting my own self ready to get to work.

I’m exhausted just thinking about it. I know I will get there, but I actually miss those days of morning autopilot, where you just get into a daily routine that flows pretty smoothly. Unless you have teenagers, I hear, and then my sympathies go out to those parents. But I digress.

So then I think: What can I do to make this process simpler so that every morning is not such a struggle, and I can ease into my days a lot easier instead of in this state of hurried frenzy? I can look at the weather for the week, and plan all their clothes and iron them over the weekend. This also allows time for my older daughter to provide her creative input with no time restriction. I know I work in food service, but I never thought of doing pre-paid tickets before—because I actually thought they were tickets and I know my kids and I didn’t want them to get lost. Who knew it was a computerized system? Apparently I am late to that party – but that will be a timesaver. As dinner is cooking, I now pack their snacks up, and this year I am blessed with no allergy restrictions, so that’s a plus. Whew – I feel better already!

How are you settling in this year? What routine tricks work for you? I’m slowly finding my way back to the school routine and starting to feel settled. Just in time for the after school activities to begin…
