server serving studentAs we continue to implement the requirements of the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act (HHFKA), we are doing some great things out there. We are educating children in the importance of eating healthy and we are making it fun! Great job! But now let’s ask ourselves: How can we make it even better??

 

 

bullet   Now that school is back in full swing, the time is right to partner with our school administrators to identify new revenue opportunities. Work with your school business managers to promote your healthy school nutrition program.

 

bullet   Show the community what you are doing by using the school website to advertise Whitsons’ marketing tools such as the SPICE Program and Nutrition Safari theme days.

 

bullet   Reinvent school serving and dining areas using new equipment, such as grab and go food bars, which yield additional sales and meal reimbursements.

 

bullet   Since it takes a while for customers to adapt to changing times, visit students in their classrooms and club meetings to explain and promote new menu items. Take some free, healthy food samples for them to taste and ask the students about their food preferences. Show the students the menu and packaging for the items they are taste-testing and have those foods available for purchase that day.

 

bullet   Creative cost containment is essential now, too. Make sure you are taking full advantage of the USDA commodity foods offered every month by working them into the students ‘ favorite menu items.

 

bullet   Reach out to other school districts in the company, too. Choose a couple of new ideas to try in your schools and share your successful food service advice with others.
