Celebrating a Pot of Golden Memories

Although I’m not of Irish descent (50% Polish, 50% Italian), each year on St. Patrick’s Day, my last name transforms from Leslie Fazin to Leslie O’Fazin — a day where anyone, from any culture (even myself!) can become an honorary Irish lad or lassie for the day.

 

My first memory of St. Patrick’s Day stems from kindergarten. Dressed from head to toe in varying shades of green, and celebrating with lots o’ green snacks and treats, my classmates and I wore nametags with the letter O attached to the front of our last names. Suddenly I wasn’t just Leslie Fazin, a five-year-old girl with dark brown hair and Polish and Italian roots, I was Leslie O’Fazin — my heritage splitting into three to make room for my new Irish lineage. It didn’t matter if my classmates were German, Scottish, Norwegian or French (or Polish and Italian like me) — on that day, over twenty years ago, we all blended together as one, in a beautiful sea of green, celebrating and laughing about our funny new last names, and learning about the many traditional and delicious Irish meals we could enjoy together with our families.

 

We learned about corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread and shepherd’s pie — and even touched upon the many green fruits and veggies we could enjoy year-round. Green grapes, green pears, green apples, green beans, kiwi, broccoli, celery and cucumbers, for example, are among some of the most delicious green produce on the market, offering many wonderful benefits that promote overall health and well-being.

 

As I’ve grown older, I’ve learned to appreciate what makes St. Patrick's Day so special and the many creative ways to keep the holiday exciting — even for the littlest of leprechauns. Consider making Irish flag kebabs out of green bell peppers, cauliflower and carrots (connecting all three with toothpicks. Tip: slice the carrots into halves for easier assembly) or cute shamrock snacks using green bell peppers (slice widthwise to reveal a lucky four-leaf clover shape; slice another pepper lengthwise to create stems) paired with your family’s favorite dip.

 

Whether it’s a memory cultivated as early as kindergarten (Leslie O'Fazin) or a new tradition formed today, for the Irish in all of us, the options are truly endless for making a pot of golden memories.
