budgeteatingTight budget? No problem! Eating healthy, and fitting more fruits and veggies into your shopping cart, shouldn’t mean sacrificing quality or flavor — or more importantly, your finances. All it takes is a little bit of planning! Here are a few low-cost solutions to make healthy eating achievable for any budget:

 

Create a game plan — and stick to it. Staying organized and keeping focused is essential for maintaining a weekly budget. Before heading out to the grocery store, take a moment to brainstorm the meals you’d like to create for the week, keeping in mind your family’s schedule and the meals you can easily prepare on busier days. Scope out the items you’ll need in your freezer, pantry or refrigerator and keep a list of the ingredients you already have on hand. By doing so, you’ll eliminate unnecessary shopping trips and save money by buying only what you truly need.

 

Think small. Some fruits and veggies don’t last long compared to their other colorful counterparts. Consider buying produce in smaller amounts, more frequently, to ensure your hard-earned money doesn’t get wasted.

 

Enjoy seasonal produce. Fresh produce often costs less (and is more flavorful) when purchased in season. A sure-fire way to enjoy seasonal produce is to visit a local farmer’s market or farmstand. Visit www.localharvest.org or http://search.ams.usda.gov/farmersmarkets to locate and support a farmer’s market in your area. For iOS users, download the free app, Farmstand, which allows users to find and share photos of local farmer’s markets, as well as post deals and other community events.

  

Try frozen or canned produce. For produce that’s not in season, consider frozen or canned options, which are available year-round and can oftentimes be more economical. For canned fruit, look for those canned in 100% fruit juice or water; for vegetables, look for “low sodium” or “no salt added” on the label.
