bushel of veggiesNow that fall is upon us, farmers markets are back in full swing! Local products are becoming more and more popular—and for good reason. Buying locally grown and raised produce, dairy products and meat, not only helps the local economy, it also provides more nutrition for you and your family!

Most fruits and vegetables lose nutrients every minute after they are taken off the vine or pulled from the ground. Therefore, the less time a product spends in transit on a truck, the better! Farmers markets are gatherings of local farmers with crops that have been recently harvested; they tend to run from the end of summer through fall, and are almost always outdoor events. You can’t get fresher produce than that unless you have your own garden!

There has also been a shift in consumer demand for organic produce. If a farm is considered “certified organic,” this means it has been certified by the USDA to prohibit the use of conventional pesticides in their soil or on their crops; though, if needed, this farm is permitted to use “organic approved” pesticides. It is a lengthy and expensive process for farms to achieve this certification, so many small family farms do not look to become certified. However, these same farms could be practicing close to organic or even fully organic pest management techniques, so make sure to ask the farmer at your local farm stand or farmers market about their practices.

The bottom line? Take advantage of any farmers markets in your area to get the most nutrition, and buy what works best for your budget and your preferences. Get to know your local food sources for a better tasting and healthier menu at home!
