nslpOctober is not only a time to celebrate Halloween and the fall harvest; it is also a time to celebrate school lunch! National School Lunch Week is just around the corner and this year we are celebrating it the week of October 13th.

National School Lunch Week (NSLW) was created in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy as a way to raise awareness of the benefits of the program and the importance of a balanced meal in students’ lives. Did you know it is the largest federal nutrition program, serving over 32 million children every day?

This year’s NSLW theme is “Get in The Game with School Lunch”. This is a very fun topic that emphasizes the need to balance healthy meals with physical activity, and since sports are so popular, this theme will definitely resonate with everyone in the school community! It is also an opportunity to plan for more fun activities in the cafeteria.

For those involved in the school lunch program, decorating your cafeteria is a great way to celebrate this week. Since this year’s theme is sports, there are many options! How about decorating the café with the school colors? Paper chains and balloons can add extra visual appeal to any servery. Or, take it one step further: embrace the theme and wear your school’s colors or your favorite team’s jersey? If you need to purchase materials, there are also many affordable resources available for you. Check out the School Nutrition Association website for some great ideas: http://www.schoolnutrition.org/NSLW2014/.

And since we are “getting in the game” with School Lunch, why not extend this theme to the menu offerings? Finger foods with a healthy twist such as low-fat mozzarella sticks, grilled chicken sandwiches, veggie sticks with hummus dip, smoothies in the color of your team, etc.! This is also a great opportunity to invite parents to join their kids in the cafeteria and see what school lunch is all about! And parents - this is a great time to reinforce eating healthy and being physically active at home!
