Melon: The Perfect Summer Fruit

MelonPerfectSummerFruit1Whether you are choosing watermelon, cantaloupe or honey dew, August proves to be the best season for adding Melon into your daily diet. Here are some great tips on how you can choose and enjoy this delicious fruit!


How to choose your Melon

Melons should be shaped according to their variety, so look for a symmetrical melon. Melons should be free from cracks, soft spots or dark bruises. Lastly, find the spot where the stem was attached. A clean, smooth break at the stem should appear, indicating that the melon detached naturally from the vine.



Make sure to wash melons before cutting them to get rid of any bacteria on the rind that is at risk for being carried from the knife blade to the flesh. Cut the melon in half and scoop out the seeds and strings. Melons can be cut into halves, quarters, wedges, cubes, or scooped into balls with a melon baller.



Health Benefits of Melon

Although there are many varieties of melons, here are the top three varieties and their health benefits.


Watermelon: The long list of health benefits of watermelons are derived from its abundance of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. These include vitamin Ccalcium, magnesium, fiber, and potassium. Furthermore, watermelons provide vitamin A, vitamin B6niacin, thiamin, and a wide variety of carotenoids and phytonutrients, including lycopene. All of these nutrients, vitamins and minerals have been linked to improving health conditions such as kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes and the prevention of cancer.


Cantaloupe: The nutritive benefits of cantaloupe are derived from the high levels of vitamin-C, vitamin-A, vitamin-B6, potassium,Niacin, dietary fiber, and folic acid. These nutrients make cantaloupe a good source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, as well as contribute to decreased risk of metabolic syndrome.


Honey Dew: Whether enjoyed fresh or added to a fruit salad, honeydew delivers iron, B vitamins and essential nutrients. These include Vitamin C to support the immune system, potassium to support normal functioning of muscules, nerves and the heart, and Vitamin B6 to help regulate modd and sleep.
