Our Daily See-Saw: Responsibility vs. Play

seesaw2Life is like a see-saw; a constant struggle for balance as we live through ups and downs. Work versus family. Time for yourself versus time for others. Pay this bill or book a vacation. Catch up on emails or read a book. Two parties at the same time-whose do you go to? Life really is an endless journey of choices and decisions…but with the right mindset, you CAN balance it all.

Too often we sacrifice one part of our lives for another, believing something takes precedence or is more important than the other. Mostly obligation trumps fun or relaxation, and that’s the biggest faux pas in life! Without taking time to cater to our own needs, we wouldn’t have the energy or desire to carry on with our responsibilities.

Summer is just about here. Whether you are one of the lucky ones who join the children on a hiatus, or continue to work throughout the summer, you need to set aside time to enjoy yourself. Even with a full work schedule, you can make the most of your free time by not wasting it.

Use breaks during the day to step outside into the sunshine; grab your lunch and enjoy it in the great weather. Daylight lasts well into the evening hours, so instead of rushing home for more responsibilities, go out and play. Spend that time in a quality way with your family or friends. Save errands and phone calls for inclement weather or block out a time to do it all at once to free up other days. Take a three day weekend if you can, or a mental health day. Set time aside every day to be alone, and let your mind and body relax from the stresses of life. Just 10-15 minutes is all you need to regroup.

It’s important to “work” some summer playtime and quiet relaxation into your schedule. Not only will it make you happier, but it will actually give you the energy and motivation to give your all to your responsibilities. Take some time to think about how you can add a little more balance into your every day!
