Stop Cold and Flu with Elderberry Extract!

elderberryWith winter now in full swing, so is cold and flu season. Everyone seems to have their own immune-boosting rituals to make sure they don’t get sick, including me. I personally take and recommend elderberry extract after having it recommended to me by many friends and my preceptors during my dietetic internship, with much success so far!

Elderberry extract (AKA Sambucol) comes from berries of the black elder plant found across Europe, Asia and northern Africa. It has been used for centuries as a healing plant for the common cold and flu virus. It’s packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to help relax coronary arteries. A recent study by BMC Complimentary and Alternative Medicine also suggested that liquid elderberry extract helped decrease growth of common infections including strep and the influenza virus.

The supplement comes in liquid and pill forms, both I’ve heard are equally effective (and that the liquid form tastes delicious!) It is mainly used for the treatment of respiratory illnesses, taken at the first sign of symptoms to shorten the length of time that you are sick. As with any supplement, consult with your doctor before taking elderberry extract, and read the product label for proper dosing instructions.

Check it out ~ and maybe elderberry will become part of your cold and flu-defense ritual!

Special thanks to Laura for her guidance -- I picked up some liquid Elderberry this past week when I was feeling under the weather, and sure enough, I was quickly back on my feet!

Laura is the best and is known for natural ingredients.
