Summer Safety Tips

sunglassesSchool is almost out and summer vacation is almost underway. For many of us, summer is our favorite time of year. It’s the best season to be outdoors enjoying the warm weather activities. With wonderful summer moments to enjoy all season long, sometimes we forget that there are some real dangers—and most of us need summer safety reminders! Here are some basic safety tips that you should keep in mind as you embark on your activities this summer:

 

Water Smarts. Swimming pools and beaches are great places to spend summer days with family and friends, but there are many lurking dangers. Children should never be left unattended around swimming pools. Even if children can swim, they should always be supervised. When spending the day at the beach, be mindful of your surroundings. Never turn your back to the ocean's waves if you are swimming, regardless of how small or calm the waves may appear to be. If you are not paying close attention, you can easily be engulfed by a wave and, what's worse, pulled underneath. Remember: Being around the water is a rite of summer, but make sure you are aware of your surroundings at all times.

 

Sun Exposure. Protect yourself and your family from the sun by wearing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, making sure to spend extra time catering to the areas known for burning easily, such as eyelids, lips, ears and the tops of your feet. Also, hats and sunglasses are a must! 

 

Stay Hydrated. Summer is a season of extreme weather temperatures. Heat exhaustion, heat stroke and dehydration can cause problems for anyone, young or old. With the rising  temperatures—especially when over 100—make sure that you and your family stay well hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids!

 

The most important thing to rember is to enjoy yourself, and to always keep these essential summer safety tips in mind. Know where you are going and pack all of the essentials: water, snacks, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses. And, of course, have fun!
