soldiergiftSmiling faces. Happy hearts. One of the greatest gifts we can teach children early in life is the spirit and power of giving. Nothing compares to the heart-healthy, mental and emotional benefits associated with brightening someone’s day. Instantly, our mood is lifted; our stress is relieved; and our morale is boosted.

Helping others in need provides us with a sense of perspective and humility, steering our focus away from what we lack as individuals, and closer to what we can each be thankful for: be it health, food, family, shelter or safety. A simple act of kindness travels miles, and together, as parents and school nutrition specialists, we can serve as powerful examples of the subtle, yet invaluable benefits of altruism.

This Halloween, consider doing something out of the ordinary with your leftover Halloween or trick-or-treat candy. Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization, sends roughly 100,000 care packages annually to troops overseas. Sweeten a soldier’s day by taking part in their Halloween Candy Buyback Program, where participating dentists “buy” back leftover Halloween candy in exchange for items such as coupons, raffles, dental giveaways or cash. Additionally, Operation Gratitude is offering a special Toothbrush Challenge this year, in the hopes of donating an incredible 100,000 toothbrushes along with these care packages.
