October is a big deal in the world of pizza. Did you know that in 1987, Congress designated October as National Pizza Month? Just think—for exactly 25 years, we have been celebrating the goodness of one of America’s favorite meals.

But we’ve been celebrating pizza around the world for centuries longer! In fact, basic pizza likely dates back to early prehistoric times, when bread was cooked on flat, hot stones. Records show that the world’s first pizzeria opened in the early 1830s in Naples, Italy, where pizza was cooked in ovens lined with volcanic rocks from a local volcano.

Zoom ahead to World War II, when servicemen returned home from Italy and craved this great Italian dish, consequently creating a BOOM in pizza’s popularity. Now, Americans consume over 40 slices of pizza per year and have experimented with likely every pizza topping in creation, ranging from the normal (fresh mozzarella, red peppers, mushrooms, sausage and pepperoni) to the adventurous (think buffalo chicken, baked ziti and lobster) to the crazy (hmmm, ham and pineapple and peanut butter and jelly?).

kalepizzaWhitsons is no different in experimenting with the various topping creations that can tantalize tastebuds. In fact, one of our accounts recently treated students to pizza topped with pickles and kale…and guess what? They loved it! And it was a great way to incorporate a serving of dark leafy greens into the meal (sneaky, sneaky!)

In honor of National Pizza Month, why not spend the next two weeks experimenting with an assortment of colorful and unusual pizza toppings? In life, it’s all about taking risks. Sometimes, it’s the most unexpected ingredient combinations that create the most delicious meals.

Don’t see your favorite pizza topping listed above? Let us know the fun and innovative ways you enjoy one of the world’s most celebrated Italian meal!
