bussafetyAh, back to school. It’s the perfect time of year for new beginnings, fresh starts and, of course, back-to-school safety. As the mother of a school aged child who is now riding on the school bus for the first time this year, talking to her about back-to-school safety was on the top of my priority list.

We discussed everything from the importance of looking left, right, left when crossing the street and listening to her bus driver and bus attendant, to keeping her seat belt fastened at all times. She knows not to move around on the bus, to make eye contact with her bus driver when crossing the street (walking behind the bus is a definite no), and most importantly, to be at least five large steps in front of the bus at all times.

But with my daughter prepared, I needed to ensure to her that I would do my part, too. It’s no surprise that with September in full swing, the number of kids, buses and vehicles on the roads increase tremendously. So, why not take the time to revisit safe driving habits that will protect motorists and pedestrians year-round?

Here are some tips for safe back to school travel:

  • Silence the Cell – Today when you look around, you will see so many drivers on their cell phones. So many accidents happen when people are texting. Put your phone away– not in arms reach. Pull over to the side of the road when using the phone or sending a text message.
  • Cruise at Safe Speeds: Pay close attention to the speed limits in school or neighborhood areas.
  • Drive Undistracted – Many accidents happen each year with drivers who are distracted doing other things while driving. For example: eating, drinking, applying makeup, using a navigation system. Set some extra time aside in the morning so you can do all these things before leaving the house.
  • Set a Good Example – Regardless of the age of your children, setting a good example is KEY! Your children watch and soak up all your actions. Make sure you are setting a good example by practicing safe driving habits.

Give yourself plenty of time to get to and from where you need to be, but remember, no matter where you’re headed to, whether to school, to work or back home, staying alert and aware of your surroundings is the best way to earn an A+ in back-to-school safety this year.
