I Care About Eye Care

We should be taking care of every part of our bodies, even the parts we can’t see. That’s right, I’m talking about our eyes! For optimal eye health, it is important to consume foods with nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc and vitamins A, C and E. Consuming foods with these nutrients can help decrease the risk for vision-related problems in the future. Try to include the following in your diet:

  • Green Leafy Vegetables. Leafy greens are exceedingly crucial when it comes to having healthy eyes. Many contain a high source of both lutein and zeaxanthin, which are related to vitamin A and beta carotene. Both of these nutrients have been shown to help protect the eyes from sunlight damage. Some leafy greens that have these amazing vitamins are collard greens, spinach and broccoli.
  • Eggs. Eggs are also high in vitamin A, so be sure to include them into your diet, in moderation of course. Vitamin A is responsible for decreasing night blindness and preventing eyes from becoming dry.
  • Nuts. Nuts contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are remarkable for decreasing dryness in eyes. Nuts also provide DHA, which is a type of omega-3 fatty acid that is particularly important in protecting the eyes from bright light damage.
  • Citrus Fruits or Juices. A majority of citrus fruits are high in vitamin C, an essential vitamin in lowering the risk for cataracts and helping with the growth and repair of a variety of tissues.

Overall, consuming a variety of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and healthy proteins will keep your eyes at their best.
