Rise and Shine the Healthy Way!
National School Breakfast Week is the week of March 4th, but breakfast isn’t just for kids! Breakfast is the best way to start your day, no matter your age. A balanced breakfast will give you steady energy throughout the morning and help you focus better since you won’t be distracted by hunger and the thought of “when’s lunch?” The best energy-boosting breakfasts contain whole grains, fruits, and lean proteins.
Whole grains such as oatmeal and whole wheat toast will make you feel fuller for longer because they are higher in fiber than the enriched white versions. Whole fruits also are higher in fiber than their processed counter parts: juice. Whole fruits are perfect for those who are on the go, and they make great snacks, too. Pack a banana, orange, or apple to have between meals instead of going to the vending machine.
As for the protein source, try peanut butter on your toast, a hardboiled egg with your oatmeal, or turkey bacon to replace pork-based meat on a breakfast sandwich. Protein takes a longer time to digest than carbohydrate, so you will be sure to keep the hunger pains away long enough to make it to lunch time.
Experiment with different breakfast choices to see what works best for you to make it through the morning!
