Protein Sustainability Scorecard – Humane World for Animals’ Ranks Whitsons a “B+”

The Humane World for Animals (HWA) has just released its fourth annual Food Service Industry Protein Sustainability Scorecard to gauge where the nation’s largest food service companies stand in offering customers more climate-friendly, plant-based menu items. Whitsons Culinary Group is excited to announce that we have earned a “B+”, underscoring our commitment to offering our customers more sustainable, plant-based options.

Our goal is to increase the availability of plant-based meals while educating our customers on the importance of making environmentally responsible choices. Through our Veggabóls program, created in collaboration with HWA, we continue to expand our selection of delicious vegan menu offerings. This program showcases a variety of innovative plant-based recipes, thoughtfully developed by both the HWA’s expert chefs and our own in-house Whitsons executive chefs. These flavorful dishes highlight the delicious possibilities of plant-based eating, helping raise awareness about more sustainable dining options that customers can’t resist.

We remain dedicated to offering a balance of animal-based menu items and plant-forward options. Animal-based proteins will not be reduced, but we plan to broaden our plant-based selections to better serve our customers who prioritize a plant-based lifestyle. This ongoing effort allows us to provide diverse menu choices and continue contributing to a more sustainable planet.

Additionally, Whitsons partners with HWA to monitor the greenhouse gas emissions reduced by participating schools. For instance, the plant-based swaps implemented earlier this school year during a month-long reporting period at Roosevelt UFSD led to a reduction of 40,592 lbs. of CO2 emissions, contributing to the mitigation of the greenhouse effect. To put this into perspective, this is equivalent to driving 46,266 miles, recycling 14,330 lbs. of waste that would otherwise have ended up in a landfill, or planting 902 trees in the ground.  We invite you to read more about Humane World for Animals’ Food Service Industry Protein Sustainability Scorecard to learn more about how Whitsons ranks among other food service companies, while prioritizing sustainability through expanded plant-based offerings.
