Putting Posture into Practice

Did you know that good posture can reduce pain and inflammation and can promote an overall healthier well-being? It’s true: maintaining good posture actually decreases the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces and stress on ligaments that hold the joints together. Mom was right when she said not to slouch! So, practice good posture; your body will thank you. Here are some of the benefits to keeping good posture:

  • Reduces lower back pain, which can cause fewer headaches.
  • Increases lung capacity.
  • Improves digestion and circulation throughout the body.
  • Can also lead to increase in energy.
  • Decreases tension throughout the body, especially around the neck area.

Good Posture While Sitting
Shoulders should be relaxed and pushed back. A good trick to know is that your collarbones should line up with your ears. Your feet should rest flat on the ground, and you should be applying even weight on both hips.

Good Posture While Standing
Your weight should be mostly on the balls of your feet. Just like sitting, your shoulder should be pulled back. Your stomach should be tucked in and your shoulder should be in line with your earlobes. Standing too long? Try shifting your weight to your heels, or you can switch weight from one foot to the other.
